Asheville Sun Soo Martial Arts holds a belt rank advancement event every other month. This past testing on February 10th and 11th saw several people showcase their skills in anticipation of being granted the ability to move forward in belt rank. In addition to the many people who are still early in their practice, we had six Black Belt candidates demonstrating the results of years of hard work. Master James Marr of Master Marr’s Original Traditional Taekwon-do in Shaker Heights, OH honored us by serving as our guest Master Instructor judge, as well as leading our Master’s Club class on Saturday morning.
As a part of this event, all belt levels who are testing show their proficiency in their patterns and one-steps (sparring combinations). In addition, upper belts display their ability to use these skills practically – in the form of board breaks and in-close self defense. Non-testing students often exhibit their skills as well. They serve as sparring partners for those who are testing, as demonstrators of a particular belt’s form pattern, and as a vocal and physical support system to those who are displaying their technique.
These events are free and open to the public, and are a great way to spend a weekend. Your next opportunity to participate in one of our regular testing events will be on April 7th and 8th. In the meantime, please enjoy this sample of photos that were taken during testing weekend. They will also be posted on our Media page and our Facebook page.
