25
What is your rank?
Green Belt
What is your occupation?
News Producer at WLOS
Why do you practice?
Before Tae Kwon Do, I was working out and running but I wasn’t becoming more flexible or learning anything while improving my fitness. I started Tae Kwon Do because I wanted to learn a skill while getting a great work out. Now I continue because it’s helping me a lot with my focus. My job as a news producer is really demanding and often I don’t have much time to react to a change of plan – if we a get a breaking story I need to be able drop whatever I’ve been working on and switch gears. Tae Kwon Do is helping me learn to do to this quickly and effectively.
How long have you been practicing?
Almost a year.
What do you enjoy most about your practice so far?
My improved ability to focus in all aspects. I also enjoy feeling accomplished!
What are some of your other hobbies, activities, or interests?
Snowboarding, wakeboarding, soccer, hiking, and reading – my favorites are science fiction and history.
What is something people at Asheville Sun Soo probably don’t know about you?
Over the past 6 years I’ve lived in several different cities in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, and several cities before that, mostly moving around for work. I think Asheville is a really cool city and I’d love to stick around long enough to earn my 1st degree black belt.
What is your favorite Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do moment?
The first time I took a class and felt like I understood how the moves worked – like this wasn’t impossible for me, I could actually do it and it was accessible.

What is your favorite Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do moment?
Testing for my white-yellow belt, my very first testing ever.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Tae Kwon Do to me is more than just how to defend your self- it is about how to be kind, patient, and helpful to others. Asheville Sun Soo is truly my family.
What is your rank?
I have a 2nd degree in TKD and a Brown belt in Danzan Ryu jujitsu
What is your occupation?
I am a science teacher currently working with at risk students.
Why do you practice?
This is a huge question – – I believe that martial arts serve many purposes for many people such as: exercise, the beauty and tradition of the art, spirituality, community/friendship, sport, self-defense, self-improvement, etc. All of these are important factors for me, and each one’s prominence in my thinking changes from month to month and year to year. Currently exercise and self-defense hold most of my attention.
How long have you been practicing?
About eight years in formal martial arts – but I believe that many other sports/activities have been an art in their own way and have I been on a 40 plus year path to what I do now.
What do you enjoy most about your practice so far?
I enjoy the ever elusive challenge of perfection. (And that my family is there to enjoy it with me.)
What are some of your other hobbies or interests?
I love joking with my kids/family, being outdoors, reading/learning, playing guitar and listening to music. I am enriched by studying religion, history, spirituality and martial arts. I enjoy cooking and craft beers and I have a modest single malt scotch collection. I hand carve wooden knives and Japanese katanas/boken and a few other things.
What is your favorite Tae Kwon Do moment?
There are so many that it is hard to say – – – the easy answer would be my black belt testing. But I’m not so sure that that would be true. Then my mind jumps to my intro or my first class. They were pregnant with such hope and possibility. But today, my answer is every class I come to – because it is one more day on my martial arts journey!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks to all of the staff for who you are and what you share with my family and me.

Mr. Randy Langley is an integral part of the community at Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do. As one of the most experienced students, Mr. Langley’s leadership helps to set an example of excellence and encourages all students to persevere to succeed. At the age of 73, Mr. Langley keeps up with teenage students and is always humble about his accomplishments, which include achieving 3rd degree black belt and attending 1500 classes since he began his practice. Additionally, Mr. Langley puts in many hours of practice outside of normal class times – for which he gets no official credit – but the extra time shows up in his technique and his ability to assist other students with their curriculum.
We are so fortunate to have Mr. Langley as a student at Asheville Sun Soo. He provides inspiration and friendship to all who interact with him, living life with a code of honor, effort and dignity while encouraging classmates with his indomitable spirit. Thank you, Mr. Langley for your contributions, your kindness toward others, and your fantastic work ethic! We are honored that you practice here at Asheville Sun Soo.
How old are you?
73
What is your rank?
3rd Degree Black Belt
What is your occupation?
I retired almost 15 years ago from a career in engineering – primarily in supervision & management. During my “retirement” I taught cycling (nee spinning) classes at the Reuter YMCA (using music from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s), later was an insurance agent, and up to this past July 15 “worked” (if you can call pouring wine and talking work) at the Biltmore Estate Winery tasting room.
Why do you practice?
At first it was a strong curiosity. I knew Master Morris though a networking group and my older daughter is also a master in northern Virginia. After starting at Asheville Sun Soo, the challenge of an organized sport and the attainable goals via the belt system kept me going. Now, it’s the investment in friendships and the practice that keep me going.
How long have you been practicing?
Eight years.
What do you enjoy about your practice so far?
This is difficult to answer; surprisingly not for fitness as I have always believed that physical fitness is a personal responsibility. What I take pleasure in is the agility and confidence I have gained from the challenge of both form-work and self-defense. I also appreciate the belt system, which I believe is key to retention – most people really appreciate the sense of accomplishment of reaching the next level. Finally, the friendships I have developed, particularly among the staff of Asheville Sun Soo, make each class a pleasure no matter how worn out I get!
What are some of your other hobbies and interests?
My family, particularly Sandra, my wife and best friend of more than 51 years, is my first interest and priority. Then come my daughters and their families, including four grandchildren. Politics and current events come next. My hobby and passion is photography.
What is something people at Tae Kwon Do probably don’t know about you?
Sandra and I have lived in seven states and have owned seven homes. After graduate school, I spent two years in the US Army attaining the rank of Captain. I have managed engineering groups, taught spinning classes, sold insurance, and was a server in the Biltmore winery.
What is your favorite Tae Kwon Do moment?
Completing my latest form successfully (though, I keep reminding myself that I always need to improve.)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Wasn’t that enough? Probably like drinking through a fire hydrant!

Our student spotlight this week is on Sofia Murphy. Sofia is a mature 16 year old who recently achieved the rank of 1st degree Black Belt by training hard with integrity and bringing a positive attitude to each class that she attends at Asheville Sun Soo. She practices alongside her step-dad, Mr. Adeeb Fakhoury, who is an experienced 3rd degree Black Belt at Asheville Sun Soo. Off the mat, Sofia is a sweet and cheerful young woman who excels academically and is a supportive friend and family member. Although Sofia is very humble and does not seek to draw attention to herself, as a Tae Kwon Do practitioner she demonstrates recognizable excellence. Sofia moves with grace and is an inspiration to all students who seek to improve their power and finesse. We are proud to have Sofia as a member of our community at Asheville Sun Soo and are grateful for the skill self-control and compassion she brings to her practice.

When I was little I used to play the piano. During those years that I played, I went to a couple of competitions and was highly scored.
What is your favorite Tae Kwon Do moment?
My favorite moment would have to be board breakings during testing. When you watch someone who doesn’t break the board their first try, but perseveres and eventually succeeds. Watching their expression is always the best, it goes from disappointed to excitement.

Kari Richmond is a committed martial artist who works hard to develop her focus and control through Tae Kwon Do. Kari is a mom of two, a music instructor, and a well rounded athlete. Kari does a remarkable job of balancing parenting with running her own business. Her strong organization skills enable her to maintain her rigorous martial arts practice in the mix of this full schedule. On the mat, Kari puts effort into both the physical and mental aspects of class, and the synergy created by her dual focus allows her train at a very high level. She also has excellent control and spatial awareness, which makes her a safe partner for new and seasoned students alike. What is your favorite Tae Kwon Do moment? I love the board breaks. I’m super proud of my own 2-board break with a sidekick in the last testing, but I am always super proud of every student and staff member board break. They are such emotionally vulnerable moments and the school community really supports people in those moments.
Is there anything else you would like to add? It is wonderful to be able to practice Tae Kwon Do with my son!
Our student spotlight this week is on Aspen McDowell. Aspen is an exemplary student who started at the age of nine in kids classes, and has since advanced to attend teen classes and mixed adult classes. Aspen is currently 12 years old and has advanced in rank to recommended black belt. Aspen’s practice at Asheville Sun Soo is characterized by self motivation, personal responsibility, and consistent courtesy towards peers and instructors.
Aspen stays on top of the cumulative traditional Tae Kwon Do curriculum by practicing outside of class, and as a result, he excels technically and is always ready to support lower belt students. Additionally, Aspen frequently volunteers at Kids Night Out – and makes a huge difference. Aspen pays attention to the details and helps to include kids who are less social by getting to know them and inviting them to an appropriate activity. The Asheville Sun Soo community is grateful to have a student like Aspen who is friendly, hard working, and inclusive towards others. Thanks Aspen for being an inspiration to your classmates and instructors!

Our student spotlight this week is on Sarah Broberg. Sarah practices alongside her two sons, Zak, age 6, and Omar, age 8, who both attend the advanced kid’s class. Sarah is an intelligent, energetic, enthusiastic and conscientious practitioner who truly pushes herself to meet her potential, both on and off the mat. When met with obstacles, Sarah finds a way! Early into her practice, Sarah injured her ankle. For some this would have been a deal breaker. Sarah, however, continued coming to class. And although she could not physically practice for a few weeks, she used her class time to observe classes until she was healed – even practicing from a rolling chair at points! Sarah’s commitment to her career in international public relations, her kids, and her practice is apparent to everyone who meets her. She also possesses a unique combination of humor and positive energy that allows her to tackle challenges with grace and flexibility. We deeply admire Sarah for her courage and humility – and we are truly grateful that she has chosen to be part of our community here at Asheville Sun Soo!
How old are you?

What is your rank?
Green belt
What is your occupation?
International corporate communications and public relations
Why do you practice?
There are several reasons I practice, but the primary motivation is to help alleviate my self-critical tendencies and reorient the way I perceive myself. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone in a safe, supportive environment is helping me recognize that it’s ok to make “mistakes” and what I used to think were weaknesses are just strengths I’m still working to enhance.
How long have you been practicing?
Since late August 2014
What do you enjoy most about your practice so far?
What do you enjoy most about your practice so far? I most enjoy the self-development aspects that are incorporated into every class at Sun Soo. Students of all ages are encouraged to move past the boundaries we set for ourselves physically and psychologically in order to reach our true potential. I love the community spirit and the great workouts, too.
What are some of your other hobbies or interests?
I enjoy spending time with my young sons (an 8-year-old blue-red belt and a 6-year-old blue belt), running, hiking, reading and coffee!
What is something people at Tae Kwon Do probably don’t know about you?
I’m slightly addicted to the use of lip balm and before testing I paint my toes the color of my next belt for a little extra inspiration.
What is your favorite Tae Kwon Do moment?
It’s so hard to choose just one because all of my classmates are so inspiring every day. At the top of the list is Master Ethan Morris’ 4th degree black belt essay and Ms. Dexter’s gorilla fight. My personal favorite Tae Kwon Do moment is actually a series of moments: The huge outpouring of support from the instructors and my classmates after I severely injured my ankle as a white-yellow belt. Their generosity of spirit and encouragement was completely unexpected and enormously humbling. Thanks again to all of you; you’ll never know the depth of my gratitude for your strength when mine faltered.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you’re thinking about starting your Tae Kwon Do practice and feel shy, embarrassed or apprehensive, putting on that white belt is more than half the battle. As the instructors say: “We were all white belts once.” You can do this.

Jarod Doster started his Tae Kwon Do practice at Sun Soo as a way to rekindle his passion for martial arts after a break from practicing for many years. Despite having already received a 1st Degree Black Belt in Karate, he humbly started back at white belt in Tae Kwon Do. His previous practice prepared him well for classes at Sun Soo, and due to his prior experience and his consistent attendance and effort in classes here, he has progressed steadily to his 1st Degree Black Belt in Traditional Tae Kwon Do. More importantly, Jarod’s previous exposure to martial arts and his understanding of the culture of a do-jang has helped him to become an exceptional leader within the Sun Soo community. Jarod’s practice is characterized by patience, attention to detail, and exceptional speed – especially for his incredibly long legs. We all appreciate the overall commitment to health and wellness that Jarod brings to Sun Soo. A professional chiropractor by profession, Jarod’s extensive knowledge of the human body deepens his ability to move well in Tae Kwon Do. He frequently can be seen lending a hand during or after class to anyone with a minor injury who might benefit from the advice of a licensed medical professional. We appreciate all of Jarod’s contributions at Asheville Sun Soo. We are proud to have him among our black belt ranks and look forward to his ongoing progress.

Max and Elliot Butterworth are two fantastic teenage brothers who practice Tae Kwon Do together here at Asheville Sun Soo. Max and Elliot’s practice is strongly characterized by their amazing teamwork and mutual support. We appreciate the kind, friendly demeanor exhibited by these young men on and off the mat – they are courteous and genuine towards everyone they interact with. Max and Elliot are also strong academically. Their excellent habits around organization and time management reinforce their success at school and at Tae Kwon Do.
Elliot has recently taken on a larger role as an assistant instructor at Asheville Sun Soo, helping out a couple days a week with kids classes. Elliot is remarkably mature for his age, and uses his practice as a way to stimulate excellence in the other areas of his life. Elliot is a fantastic martial artist, and moves with grace, power, and detail.
Max has also contributed many hours volunteering with kids classes at Asheville Sun Soo. He has a great sense of humor and a knack for including others socially. Saturday, Nov. 15th, 7 – 9 p.m. Please join me for a book talk, signing and tasty treats. It would be a joy to see familiar Sun Soo faces there.
THE CANOE: Set over the course of ten days in 1912, this poetic portrait of love and loss follows two simultaneous stories: the coming of age of Bernie Kingston, the teenage son of a coffin maker who lives along the Chesapeake Bay and Katherine Chambers, a middle-aged Englishwoman leaving home for the first time as she seeks to recover from the loss of her husband and son. Written in journal format, their parallel journeys are told against the backdrop of the Titanic disaster and the communities touched by its tragedy.”
The Canoe is available in store at Malaprop’s, and is available in print and ebook online via Indiebound, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashword.
Interview –
Age: 47
Rank: White/Yellow belt
Occupation: Author/Artist/Photographer
Why I practice:
Having studied and practiced Qi Gong, I have always wanted to learn an additional martial art. When my son, Wilson, started at Sun Soo, I knew I would soon follow in his footsteps.
I practice martial arts because I believe life is a constant conversation between the light and the dark, and all that falls in between. I believe a martial arts practice gives practitioners the ability to choose more consciously, more intentionally, how to wake from, enter into or be in the light, the dark, and all the places in between.
This is also why I am an artist, and I believe each of us is an artist. Every moment is a creative act. We might have a set daily routine, but each moment is absolutely new, never to occur again; we can create a new experience within the repetition of our daily lives. A practice like Tae Kwon Do drives this home for me.
How long have I been practicing Tae Kwon Do: Since July 2014
What I enjoy most:
I like learning the forms. I have a background in dance, and always enjoyed learning new choreography. The forms are new choreography to me. The learning is challenging and exciting. I also enjoy being part of a community. Being able to witness and support each other’s learning processes and achievements is a privilege for which I am very grateful.
Other hobbies/interests:
I paint very large, abstract multi-canvas paintings. Some of my work can be seen at Gallery Asheville and Café 64, both in downtown Asheville. I am a photographer as well, and enjoying taking portraits of people.
Something people at Tae Kwon Do probably don’t know about me:
I wrote and performed a solo show that toured across country for two years with three runs off-Broadway. The play is called Sole Survivors. I interviewed immigrants from Mexico and El Salvador, and created four composite characters who told their stories interspersed with the music of a live mariachi.
As an actor, writer, and former photojournalist, interviewing the people and writing this show was an absolute thrill to see how all my creative outlets could come together, be expressed, and shed light on and give voice to the stories we often never see or hear.
Favorite Tae Kwon Do movement: Jump kicks!

Age: 44
Rank: yellow/green belt
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor which means I am board certified to conduct talk therapy to help clients with an array of issues that are often interfering with them living their best life. I own my own private practice but have worked in a variety of settings (domestic violence and homeless shelters, a rehabilitation hospital in the traumatic brain injury unit and a university student center). It is an honor and privilege to be in this line of work and yet it can also be an arduous career path where self-care is of utmost importance. If I don’t take care of myself then I won’t be able to take very good care of the people counting on me…my clients and most importantly my family.
So that explains the primary reason I practice Tae Kwon Do at Sun Soo. My son Dylan (who is 8 years old and a green blue belt) began practicing in the Spring of 2013. The more I watched his classes and witnessed the changes in him, the more I wondered what it would be like to be an adult student. I remember Master Morris mentioning that really cool things happen when parents practice with their children. I remained skeptical for a short time, worrying that I would somehow interfere with my son’s progress. It wasn’t until I watched some of the Saturday testings that I began to see what he meant. I saw a huge community of adults and students that supported each other with cheer, hugs and words of encouragement. I saw instructors and students fully invested in their school and I started to realize I wanted to be a part of that…not just sitting on the sidelines. I also realized that my life load was pretty heavy and I needed a healthy way to unload that heaviness. I also have always been happier when I was part of a team (athletic or otherwise) and I hadn’t been part of a team in some time. The final nudge came from my friend, colleague and Sun Soo black belt Nancy Fraser (who works in my building). She seemed to think it was just what I needed. The rest is history. I decided to ask Santa for a uniform and first month at Sun Soo for Christmas. Thanks Santa! I started in January of this year.
At first I felt overwhelmed and about as uncoordinated as I can ever recall feeling. Fortunately I felt surrounded by smiling supportive students and instructors who helped me learn to stop worrying and just keep going. I enjoy so many aspects of my practice 7 months into it. I absolutely love the community and the heart of this school. I love that my body, mind and spirit are getting stronger every class. I love the amazing friends I am making. I love watching the incredible contribution Sun Soo has made in my son’s life. He has grown up so much in the past year. I love that now we have gotten my husband Gren hooked too. Tonight he said that he “needs” to get to class tomorrow “it’s been too long since Monday.” I love the challenges ahead and the upper ranking students that show me what I am capable of with enough practice and perseverance.
I have many other hobbies and interests. I love rock climbing, horseback riding, canoeing/kayaking, playing soccer and lacrosse, hiking, drawing, photography, cooking, traveling, volunteering for Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and enjoying time with my kids.
I’m not sure if I can narrow down a favorite moment in Tae Kwon Do. I love watching my son test and seeing how laser focused and full of pride he can become. I enjoy the many moments when I have laughed so hard or been moved to tears. I enjoy and appreciate the extra help and mentoring that seems readily available and eagerly given. I love that when I get called onto the mat at testing, everywhere I look there are people smiling and encouraging me to do my best. I am eternally grateful for Sun Soo and everything it has and continues to give my family.

Our adult student spotlight this week is Simeon Kuic. Simeon is a warm, friendly presence at our school. He brings the same attention to detail to his Tae Kwon Do practice that he uses as a chiropractic physician to treat patients. We admire that Simeon has kept up his practice even while going through major life events such as moving his business to a new space and having a baby! Go Simeon and thanks for being a part of our school.
Name: Simeon Kuic
Age: 44

Occupation and Where you work/go to school: Chiropractor at “Downtown Chiropractic” and Professor at South College
Why you practice: I joined after seeing several demonstrations at public events. Every time I was impressed with how happy and alive the group was…and the feeling as contagious!
How long you’ve been practicing: Close to three years now
What you enjoy most about your practice so far: I love how Tae Kwon Do (and this group in particular) is so integrating. Sure it’s a physical work out…but it is so, so, so much more. Health is my profession, and I strive to teach my patients the importance of integrating the physical, mental, emotional, social (and spiritual) aspects of ourselves. It is the only way that true health happens. This place embodies that process.
Other hobbies/interests: Music, hydroponic vegetable and herb gardening.
Something people at Tae Kwon Do probably don’t know about you: I have five sisters and they all took ballet growing up (but not me). One year our ENTIRE family of eight was cast in the Columbia City Ballet production of “The Nutcracker.”
Favorite Tae Kwon Do moment: It happens about every testing. It’s usually when a kid is trying to break a board. They’ve made several attempts, their foot or hand is hurting, tears are welling in their eyes, they want to give up but hundreds of people are there watching. Then Master Morris calls them over. He looks them in the eyes and whispers something in their ear. Then they walk up to the board and break it and the crowd goes wild! That kind of energy is priceless.
Our adult student spotlight this week is on Season Jacques. Season is a fun and hardworking mother of three. She practices Tae Kwon Do with her husband and her oldest daughter. We love having Season in classes here because she gets along with all types of people and makes new folks feel at home. Additionally, her personal practice is rigorous and her movements are powerful. Before Tae Kwon Do, I was working out and running but I wasn’t becoming more flexible or learning anything while improving my fitness. My job as a news producer is really demanding and often I don’t have much time to react to a change of plan – if we a get a breaking story I need to be able drop whatever I’ve been working on and switch gears. Tae Kwon Do is helping me learn to do to this quickly and effectively.

What is your favorite Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do moment?
The first time I took a class and felt like I understood how the moves worked – like this wasn’t impossible for me, I could actually do it and it was accessible.

Asheville Sun Soo’s resident septuagenarian raises the bar for indomitable spirit!
/in Student SpotlightMr.
Sofia Murphy – A fierce, friendly martial artist in our midst

Off the mat, Sofia is a sweet and cheerful young woman who excels academically and is a supportive friend and family member. Sofia moves with grace and is an inspiration to all students who seek to improve their power and finesse. We are proud to have Sofia as a member of our community at Asheville Sun Soo and are grateful for the skill self-control and compassion she brings to her practice.

Sarah Broberg – A dedicated Martial Artist
/in Student SpotlightOur student spotlight this week is on Sarah Broberg.
37
What is your rank?
Green belt
What is your occupation?
International corporate communications and public relations
Why do you practice?
There are several reasons I practice, but the primary motivation is to help alleviate my self-critical tendencies and reorient the way I perceive myself. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone in a safe, supportive environment is helping me recognize that it’s ok to make “mistakes” and what I used to think were weaknesses are just strengths I’m still working to enhance.
How long have you been practicing?
Since late August 2014
What do you enjoy most about your practice so far?

Jarod Doster – An exemplary Black Belt at Asheville Sun Soo
/in Student SpotlightJarod Doster started his Tae Kwon Do practice at Sun Soo as a way to rekindle his passion for martial arts after a break from practicing for many years.
